Creative Projects

Through coursework, jobs, and hobbies, I’m exploring various creative outlets for real organizations. Highlighted here are some of my recent media and communications projects.

Soil Rocks: A World Without Soil Book Website

Website Design

Dr. Jo Handelsman wrote a book, A World Without Soil: The Past, Present, and Precarious Future of the Earth Beneath our Feet, about the state of our soils and what we can do to protect this precious resource.

I got to design a website to promote this book. I regularly update the site with articles, interviews, talks, and awards for A World Without Soil.

UW Urban Canid Project

Website Redesign

The UW Urban Canid Project seeks to understand coyote and fox populations living in Madison, WI. Their research and outreach goals are big, but their communication strategy via their website and social media presense did not match their efforts in the field.

With a team, I helped assess limitations and needs of the current website and redesigned the entire site using Wix. The new site emphasizes key research on canids and work the UWUCP is doing.

Handelsman Lab

Website Redesign

Researchers in the Handelsman Lab study bacteria: how they communicate with other bacteria, impact hosts, and serve as a source of antibiotic compounds.

I wanted to refresh our lab’s website to reflect the exciting science our team is doing. The redesigned site addresses the same research topics with an updated layout that reflects the bold questions being asked in the lab.

The newly designed website uses the Avada theme from WordPress.

Women in Motion

As a staff writer at the Luther College newspaper, Chips, I loved writing news and features stories. When a sports section editing position opened up, I jumped on it, ready to take on a new challenge. But I wasn’t finding the same fulfillment in editing game and meet recap stories as writing about people and events.

Thus began Women in Motion, a bimonthly feature in the sports section of women athletes’ stories. I pitched topics from the history of women’s sports at Luther College, a profile on the Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach, and gender discrimination, especially as it related to Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya.
